one of my splits has resulted in a small queen - it was just slightly bigger than the workers and far smaller than the other queens of the same age. after 2 weeks from hatching it was still in the hive and not laying eggs - then i checked again on the 3rd week and seems she is gone completely, i checked once again few days later and didnt see it.... so i gave them a frame of eggs and now they are making a new queen - that also indicates that the queen is not longer there
was the queen naturally eliminated because it was small or this was a mere coincidence and perhaps was lost or killed during the mating flight ?

Sounds like a virgin queen that failed to mate? They're also very quick and can be hard to spot.
